Results appear gradually over three to six months. Most patients see visible improvement after three sessions spaced four weeks apart, with continued gains through six treatments. PRP revives miniaturized follicles that retain regenerative capacity, but cannot restore permanently lost follicles.

Success depends on starting treatment early in the hair loss process, maintaining the recommended six-treatment series, and combining PRP with oral therapies like supplements or topical treatments like Minoxidil.

Candidacy for PRP Hair Restoration

Most adults experiencing early-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) are candidates for PRP. Age alone doesn’t disqualify you — we’ve treated patients from their 20s through their 70s — but hair loss stage matters more than years.

PRP works best for Norwood stages II through V in men and Ludwig stages I through II in women, when follicles are miniaturized but not yet permanently lost. If your scalp shows smooth, shiny areas with no visible pores, those follicles are gone and won’t respond to PRP. In those cases, we’ll discuss hair transplant as an alternative and use PRP to preserve the remaining follicles.

We don’t treat patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have active scalp infections or blood clotting disorders. Patients on anticoagulants or with certain autoimmune conditions may need medical clearance before starting treatment.

Do You Need PRP After a Hair Transplant?

Lifelong PRP treatments will be required after a hair transplant in order to maintain follicle health and maximize hair density. Without PRP, the inflammatory and genetic conditions that originally led to your hair loss will continue to manifest themselves, leading to slow damage of the transplanted follicles over time.

PRP Hair Treatment Side Effects

PRP hair treatment side effects are minimal because we’re injecting your own platelets — there’s no risk of allergic reaction to foreign substances. Most patients experience mild scalp tenderness, redness, and small injection-site bumps that resolve within 24 to 48 hours.

Some patients notice temporary shedding two to four weeks after treatment as damaged hairs are pushed out to make room for new growth. This is a normal part of the follicle cycle and doesn’t indicate treatment failure.

ACELL

ACell Micromatrix is a wound-healing product sold by the company,
ACell, that is formulated from porcine (pig) urinary bladder. To date, no studies have been able to prove the efficacy of ACell Micromatrix in hair regeneration as compared to PRP alone. We do not offer ACell due to 1. it’s high cost to the patient, 2. the lack of efficacy data and 3. higher risk of allergic reaction because it is derived from an animal product. Only in the case that a patient fails 6 PRP treatments do we recommend trying ACell. However, at SLK we do believe there exists a strong scientific argument for providing matrix scaffolding support for PRP, and thus we do supply
another type of matrix for all of our hair PRP patients.
